Beyond being an awesome read, The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin fills me with an odd simmering hope that I used to get from Star Trek.

The idea that we can do things both as a collective and as an individual to make the world a better place even in the face of pervasive challenges  and that one's individual identities can strengthen a group.

The book is beautiful and I want to do five million things at once right now to connect to and embrace my own community.

(Also, I'm cackling over how "shop local to protect your world from interdimensional warfare!" was an actual thought that went through my head while reading this.)
