I love the "I need to research [all of the things] for writing fic or starting a hobby but wow does that research drive get in the way of actually writing and/or doing the hobby.

Fic notes for All the Bells Call Home, the fic that came out of nowhere and pushed me out of a several month long writing hiatus.

Beyond being an awesome read, The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin fills me with an odd simmering hope that I used to get from Star Trek.

The idea that we can do things both as a collective and as an individual to make the world a better place even in the face of pervasive challenges  and that one's individual identities can strengthen a group.

The book is beautiful and I want to do five million things at once right now to connect to and embrace my own community.

(Also, I'm cackling over how "shop local to protect your world from interdimensional warfare!" was an actual thought that went through my head while reading this.)

Probably one of the most fun parts of writing fic is deciding which parts of the canon you are going to keep, which parts you are going to twist or put through a different genre lens, which ones you are going to dismiss completely, and which ones you aren’t really going to address but leave the readers to consider.

And with a long anime like Bleach, oh boy is there a lot of things like this to decide. You have a very long canon with convoluted and mildly fleshed out worldbuilding, anime filler arcs, connected novels (that I have not read), video games, that anniversary chapter recently released, and probably a number of things I don’t recall or don’t even know about.

I’m choosing to look at Bleach with  “oooh, what a big sandbox to work with!” which is funny to me since I also dropped SPN early on for a similar exponentially expanding worldbuilding and never ending The Next Big Bad and similarly decide when I am still in a KHR fic writing mood to dismiss A LOT  more of the later stage lore.

For my Alternative Phenotypes series, I’m currently considering keeping much of the concepts/storyline of

  • Most of the canon arc up through the Fullbringer arc
  • The Zanpakutō Unknown Tales anime filler arc
  • Some stand alone anime filler episodes
  • Heavily borrowing backstory/information/maybe some plot from the Thousand Year Blood War
  • A tiny smidge from my limited knowledge of the video games Hello Segundas Etapas
  • The extra feeling of Soul Society being quite disturbing reinforced from the anniversary chapter but probably without the particular specifics from that

I just noticed Katekyo Hitman Reborn is on Hulu as well as Bleach...and it brings me complicated feelings. Like oh wow would I love to get back into writing Teen Mom Varia Edition or Burn (In Your Own Flame)...but I also have to recognize that just like some of the deep cleaning I have done this last week, that strong spark to write more is coming from the avoidance of buckling down and studying for an important exam in my career.

And while going back and forth between writing and studying as a productive technique works decently for me, I cannot juggle as many projects as my heart wishes 😥

Maybe that can change in May once I pass The Exam and get an additional shiny set of letters to add onto my doctorate...

So it was a “Wheel of the Year” Holiday this last weekend and one that leaves me a bit more disconnected. I can’t say I’m celebrating Lammas or Lughnasadh really but I think I would mark “High Summer” as a part of my individual practice.

Sometimes when reading Bleach, I have moments of “Wait, am I reading a supernatural or scifi series?”

Yes, the supernatural element is undeniable but I get stuck on how the messes projects of Urahara, Aizen, and Kurotsuchi all have big, mad scientist implications from the making of Aizen’s arrancar to Nemu to Urahara’s...everything.
